This week on the Hub Program Spotlight we would like to feature Point University Men’s Golf, a program that competes as an NAIA program as part of the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Point University was one of the few fortunate programs to be able to continue competing in tournaments this fall during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has enjoyed an outstanding fall!
The Skyhawks are led by head coach Steven Paine ([email protected]), who has been coach of the team for the past six years. Coach Paine has led his team to their first three NAIA national championships from 2016-17 through 2018-19, and has been named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for each of those seasons! He also played college golf at Columbus State University, where he was an NCAA All-American Honorable Mention.
Point University Men’s Golf finished off their Fall 2020 season undefeated, rounding out their FIFTH straight tournament with a win! The Skyhawks are the number one nationally ranked team in the NAIA.
After months full of uncertainty and angst with the pandemic gripping the nation, the Skyhawks were unsure about opportunities to compete this fall. Nevertheless, the team went 5 for 5 and most recently won the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational in St. Simons Island, GA. Point U won by 16 strokes, finishing -12 as a team for the event with rounds of 282-273-285. Individually, freshman Cole Stevens won the event in a field of 58 players. He went -9 over three days, and had rounds of 68-65-71. The Skyhawks had three other players finish inside the top 10 who finished at -6, E, and +3 respectively for three days.
Said Coach Paine, “This win also completes an undefeated 2020 calendar year, which is very hard to do in golf. When our season was cut short in March, we had won four straight to start the spring. This fall, we won five straight playing some great golf. We cannot wait to get back at it in the new year!”
Although their fall season has come to a close, Point University also racked up wins at the NAIA National Preview, Point University Fall Invitational, Music City Invitational, and Appalachian Athletic Conference Fall Championship. In the five events they played, they beat the 56 teams they faced and solidified their number one NAIA ranking status.
We commend Point University Men’s Golf for an awesome fall, and we wish them continued success in the future.
Enjoy Your Journey!
