Within the sphere of international sports, the Can-Am Junior Matches has been subtly yet steadily gaining traction. Having recently commemorated its 27th year, it stands as a beacon of inter-nation sporting collaboration.

A Testament to International Cooperation

The match is an annual event hosted at the Wachesaw Plantation Club. It brings together the top eight boys and girls from Ontario, Canada, in a friendly competition against their South Carolina, USA counterparts. With origins rooted in Myrtle Beach’s annual Can-Am Days, this initiative has not only survived but flourished, reaching impressive milestones as it approaches its fourth decade.

Establishing a Home Ground

Initiated in 1999 at the now-closed Bay Tree Golf Club, the matches found their permanent home at the Wachesaw Plantation after a three-year run elsewhere. The South Carolina Golf Association and the SC Junior Golf Association, cooperating with Wachesaw Plantation members, organize these matches.

Support and Success

Ross Desmond, Wachesaw Plantation Club’s general manager and chief operating officer, highlights the substantial support the event has received. ‘We see tremendous support. It seems to stem from a shared desire to make these young golfers feel as special as possible,’ he noted.

The tournament style involves 16 singles matches following Saturday’s two-person team best ball, with a boy and girl from each country pairing up. The Friday junior-member tournament, an additional feature, includes 32 foursomes, each comprising one Can-Am junior playing alongside Wachesaw members.

A Community Effort

The tournament’s success hinges on the Wachesaw Plantation Club members’ dedication and efforts. With approximately 100 sponsors, all club members, and four member-run businesses, the competition has seen consistent growth and improvement each year.

Additionally, around 50 volunteers from the club membership assume various roles during the event. They range from hosting South Carolina players in their homes to serving in on-course positions during play. ‘It’s definitely a team effort,’ Desmond acknowledged.

A Growing Tradition

The growing club support is reflected in the increase in junior-member teams from 16 to 32 over the years. This expansion signifies the unwavering dedication of the Wachesaw Plantation Club members and their ambition to elevate the event annually.

As the Can-Am Junior Matches continue to expand, they serve as a shining illustration of how sports can bridge international gaps. Nearing its 30th year, the tournament consistently promotes a spirit of cooperation and camaraderie among the golfing communities in Ontario and South Carolina. It celebrates not just the love for the sport, but also the shared values and goals that bring people together.
