In the world of collegiate golf, the BIG EAST Conference is a hotbed of talent. Recently, three golfers distinguished themselves and earned the recognition of the BIG EAST Weekly Honors. These players are Matt Zerfass from Villanova, and Sam Fauver and Kyle Smith from Xavier.

Impressive Performance by Matt Zerfass

Senior Matt Zerfass of Villanova University clinched his second career medalist honor at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia. Zerfass sealed the victory with an impressive 4-under final round 67, the best score to par in his career. This culminated in a 54-hole score total of 208, putting him at 5-under par for the tournament.

Xavier Freshman Sam Fauver Makes a Mark

At the Keene Trace Collegiate in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Xavier University freshman Sam Fauver tied for the top spot. Not only did this mark his first collegiate victory, but he also finished at even-par for the 36-hole competition. The young golfer led the field in par 4 scoring, maintaining an average of 4.00.

Kyle Smith: A Rising Star at Xavier

Sophomore Kyle Smith, also from Xavier, tied for medalist honors at the same tournament. Smith opened the competition with a commendable 2-under 70, followed by a 2-over 74 during the second round. This marked Smith’s fifth career top 10 finish and his first victory as a Musketeer. In par 4 scoring, Smith ranked second with a 4.05 average.

Other Notable Performances

Other noteworthy performances in the BIG EAST Conference include that of Creighton’s Grant Feldman, who placed second at the UCSD Invite at Torrey Pines. His 11-under score of 205 contributed to his fourth career top-five finish.

Additionally, Marquette captured its first win of the season at the Bell Bank ‘Pay It Forward’ Collegiate in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Mason Schmidtke led the Golden Eagles, placing second overall with a career-best 8-under total score of 208.

In the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, Villanova ranked second as a team, finishing at 11-over for the tournament. Georgetown secured sixth place, led by CJ Winchenbaugh’s tie for 20th place.
