The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, an initiative supported by Chase and Kohler Co., is much more than a high-stakes golf tournament. This annual event presents a unique opportunity for student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Universities, and other minority-serving institutions to both compete at a high level and explore the myriad career avenues in the $102 billion golf industry.

For the first time, the Park in West Palm Beach is hosting the 39th edition of the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship (PWCC), marking the occasion with a Youth Day event. This day is dedicated to introducing local youngsters to the fundamental aspects of golf, with community organizations such as The Path, Adopt-A-Family, PGA Jr. League, and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission participating.

During Youth Day, PGA of America Golf Professionals from around the country, serving as Championship ambassadors, provided hands-on training to the youth. Korn Ferry Tour Member Ian Gilligan also conducted an engaging clinic. Langston Frazier, a two-time PWCC participant and now a PGA Ambassador, remarked on the importance of such initiatives, emphasizing golf as a sport that not only promotes physical activity but also cultivates positive character traits.

However, the Championship’s commitment to inclusion and opportunity extends beyond the golf course. The event is also a platform for student-athletes to connect with industry leaders and explore the various career opportunities within the golf industry. The 39th edition of the Championship continued this tradition by hosting the PGA WORKS Beyond the Green event presented by CastleOak Securities and Kohler Co. at SoFi Center, the official home to the TGL Golf League.

The Beyond the Green event allowed student-athletes to network with a range of national and global organizations keen on recruiting the next generation of golf industry professionals. The list of participating organizations included prominent names such as PGA of America Career Services, Chase, Kohler Co., Troon, the United States Golf Association, Ladies Professional Golf Association, and PGA Tour SuperStore, among others.

Joseph Fenceroy, a junior at Coastal Carolina University’s PGA Professional Golf Management Program, spoke to the instrumental nature of events like Beyond the Green. They provide an essential platform for students to discover the breadth and depth of career opportunities available in the golf industry, thereby helping them navigate their career paths post-graduation.

The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship is proving to be a pivotal event in not only diversifying the face of golf but also in championing career expansion within the sport. Its dual focus on fostering sporting talent and promoting career growth is setting a new precedent in the world of golf.
