The Auburn Men’s golf team recently secured a massive victory against Stanford. This win propelled the Tigers straight into the Final Four of the NCAA Championship. During the Tuesday morning match, Auburn dominated Stanford 3.5-1.5. Ultimately, the Tigers earned the mandatory three points to advance in the national competition.
Freshmen Lead the Charge
While the entire lineup contributed, a few standout performances tipped the scales for Auburn. For instance, SEC Freshman of the Year Jake Albert led the charge. He defeated Stanford’s Ethan Gao in a stunning 6&5 victory. Albert carded five birdies during his first nine holes. Furthermore, he capitalized on several holes where Gao stumbled with a bogey and double bogey.
Auburn kept the momentum rolling as Josiah Gilbert secured a 3&2 victory to capture the team’s second point. Soon after, freshman Logan Reilly claimed the final, decisive point. He triumphed over Stanford ace Dean Greyserman 2&1. Reilly sealed the match by draining a long birdie putt on the 17th hole.
A Shocking Match-Play Upset
Despite the team’s triumph, the morning featured one massive shock on the green. Stanford’s Nathan Wang defeated Auburn star Jackson Koivun 2UP. Remarkably, Koivun had never lost a match-play round at the NCAA Championship before this upset. The result stunned fans because Koivun shot an impressive 7-under during stroke play, while Wang struggled at 12-over.
Heavyweight Semifinal Rematch
Following the quarterfinal victory, Auburn will face Oklahoma State in a highly anticipated semifinal showdown. This match promises elite competition. Oklahoma State won the 2025 national championship and returns with that exact same title-winning lineup. However, Auburn brings its own championship pedigree after winning the national crown in 2024.
Tigers veterans Jackson Koivun and Josiah Gilbert both played key roles in that 2024 victory. Now, they return to the greens at La Costa to fuel the rematch. Interestingly, Koivun won multiple National Player of the Year honors over Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout. However, Stout holds the ultimate momentum after recently clinching the 2026 NCAA individual title.
Officials have not yet announced the official tee times for the semifinals. Nevertheless, golf enthusiasts eagerly await this thrilling contest. It will undoubtedly showcase the absolute best talent in collegiate golf.
