Oklahoma State University junior Preston Stout just wrote his name in bold letters into Cowboy golf history. He claimed the 2026 NCAA individual championship title. Consequently, he added another brilliant chapter to the university’s historic athletic legacy.

Chasing Cowboy Legends

Stout walks through the trophy-laden clubhouse at Karsten Creek. Naturally, the weight of the program’s history feels palpable. Oklahoma State holds a whopping dozen national team titles, and Stout significantly contributed to that legacy last year. However, he took his game to a whole new level this season. He achieved milestones that no other Cowboy player has ever touched.

Drama at Omni La Costa

Omni La Costa hosted the grueling national tournament field. There, Stout became the 10th player from Oklahoma State to win the NCAA individual crown. He is the first Cowboy to do so since Matthew Wolff in 2019.

Of course, the path to glory threw some major obstacles his way. Stout held a massive six-shot lead on the back nine. Then, he had to brace himself for a potential playoff against Alabama’s William Jennings. Ultimately, Jennings missed his par putt on the 72nd hole, and Stout drained a clutch birdie putt to seal the biggest win of his career.

Ice in His Veins

Stout entered the final round with a slim one-shot lead. Quickly, he extended his advantage to five-under through 11 holes. Suddenly, the intense pressure mounted. He three-putted for bogey on the 12th hole, then dropped more shots on the 14th and 17th holes. This unexpected slide shocked fans. After all, Stout previously became the first player to win three Big 12 individual titles.

Nevertheless, his mental fortitude saved the day. His coach, Alan Bratton, heavily praised that unwavering resolve. Bratton caddied for Stout throughout all 72 holes. Indeed, his deep belief in the junior paid off when Stout successfully executed a tricky up-and-down on the final hole to secure the title.

Major Exemptions Await

This historic victory yields massive professional rewards. Stout earned automatic exemptions into the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Additionally, he secured an invitation to the 2027 Masters, assuming he maintains his amateur status. Undoubtedly, Bratton will carry Stout’s bag at these legendary major tournaments.

This trophy marks Stout’s fifth victory this year. Furthermore, it is the eighth win of his stellar Oklahoma State career. He now ties Willie Wood for third on the school’s all-time wins list. Only Lindy Miller and Scott Verplank hold more titles. Most importantly, it represents the highest single-season win total for any junior in Cowboy history. The entire golf world will watch this young phenom with bated breath.
