The Northern Michigan University women’s golf team is currently finalizing its preparations for the highly anticipated 2026 GLIAC Spring Championship. This prestigious event is scheduled to take place at the Stonehedge North Golf Course, located at the Gull Lake View Golf Resort in Augusta, Michigan. Consequently, a rigorous three-day schedule has been set, beginning with stroke play on Friday, April 17, and concluding with high-stakes match play on Sunday, April 19.

Championship Format and Field Favorites

The tournament structure is designed to test both consistency and competitive grit over several rounds. Initially, a two-round stroke play competition will be held through Saturday morning. Following this, the field will be narrowed down for a four-team semi-final match play session on Saturday evening. Ultimately, the championship will be decided by a final match play round between the top two remaining programs on Sunday.

While the Wildcats are focused on an upset, several regional powerhouses are currently viewed as the early favorites:

  • Grand Valley State University (GVSU): Ranked #2 regionally and #17 nationally, the defending champions remain the team to beat.

  • Ferris State University: Currently ranked #5 regionally, the Bulldogs enter the weekend on a hot streak after recent third-place finishes.

  • Regional Challengers: Davenport, Wayne State, and Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) all occupy top-20 regional rankings, ensuring a formidable field for the Wildcats.

Wildcat Momentum and Individual Leaders

A significant boost in momentum was recently gained by the NMU squad following a fourth-place finish at the UIU Spring Invite. Despite weather-related cancellations that shortened the event to a single round, several players delivered standout performances. Specifically, Abbie Pietila and Maddy Martens both secured T3 individual finishes, each posting a score of +7.

Additionally, the team’s depth has been bolstered by the consistent play of Payton Donnelly, who recently earned a T16 finish with ten pars in her last outing. Other key contributors expected to impact the leaderboard include:

  • Aavra Relich: A freshman looking to make her mark in her first conference championship.

  • Gabriella Moreau: A senior leader providing veteran experience to the starting lineup.

  • Abby Luke: A sophomore who has shown proficiency in par-three scoring during recent tournaments.

Building on Past Experiences

The 2026 championship serves as an opportunity for the Wildcats to improve upon their seventh-place finish from the previous season. Last year, the team’s total score was highlighted by a second-round improvement of eight strokes, demonstrating a capacity for resilience under pressure. Furthermore, the Stonehedge North course—famous for its forested terrain and dramatic elevation changes—is expected to provide a unique challenge that suits the Wildcats’ strategic style of play.

Ultimately, the goal for Northern Michigan is to secure a spot in the Saturday evening semi-finals. While the competition remains fierce, the combination of recent top-three individual performances and improved team scoring averages suggests that the ‘Cats are well-positioned for a successful postseason run.
