Golf lovers are expressing dismay as the Louisiana State University (LSU) prepares for the permanent closure of its golf course on June 30, 2026. It’s a decision that comes on the heels of a detailed multi-year review, primarily driven by financial concerns. Before the final closure, the course will cease to be open to the public from May 9, 2026.
A Cherished Haven
The golf course has served as a sanctuary for many, including Sean Hanly, who visits the venue for daily relaxation. Upon hearing about the imminent closure, Hanly voiced his disappointment, underscoring the venue’s special significance for him. His words aptly captured his sentiments, ‘I wish it was sticking around but I guess it’s sad to see it’s going,’ Hanly mourned.
Financial Struggles
LSU has stated that despite being a source of revenue, the golf course was economically unfeasible. In the 2025 fiscal year, the 18-hole course recorded 15,012 rounds played, bringing in a revenue of $554,748. However, the costs associated with maintaining the course far exceeded its revenue, totaling up to $582,588. The wear and tear on various parts of the property were evident, suggesting the course’s struggle to keep up with heavy usage without sufficient funding.
Nathan Hays, an LSU sophomore, voiced similar feelings to Hanly. He expressed his fondness for the course, situated a short distance from his residence and school. ‘I love just coming out here and hitting some balls after class,’ Hays revealed.
Potential Impact on Local Golfing Community
The closure of the golf course not only signifies a loss to its regular patrons but also indicates a potential issue for the regional golfing community. Hays expressed worries about potential overcrowding at other local golf courses due to the closure. ‘With losing this course, it’ll definitely become way more packed,’ Hays anticipated.
Indeed, this closure marks the end of an era. The LSU Golf Course was much-loved; a place of relaxation, a venue for refining golfing skills, and a cherished community hub. Hanly perfectly encapsulated this sentiment: ‘It meant a lot to me, and you know golf is a meaningful game to a lot of people. Rest in peace LSU golf course.’
As for the future usage of the property, LSU has stated that no final decision has been made. The university, however, expressed its gratitude for the golf course’s longstanding community role and promised to support its employees during this transition period.
