In a notable display of sporting prowess, Georgia Southern University’s men’s golf team bagged the runner-up honors at the Schenkel Invitational. The tournament, which marked its 46th playing this year, saw the Eagles staging a strong performance, only to be narrowly edged out by the 26th ranked Utah.

The Schenkel Invitational: A Fierce Competition

Hosted at the Forest Heights Country Club, the Schenkel Invitational is a highly competitive event that attracts top-ranking teams. This year, the competition saw Utah, led by a second-round tally of 268, carding a -21 for the tournament. They managed to fend off the final-day charge from both the host Georgia Southern and West Virginia, beating them by four and five strokes, respectively. The individual category was a nail-biter as well, with Yale’s Matt Lin and Notre Dame’s Jacob Modleski finishing at -13, thereby being crowned as the first co-champions in the tournament’s history.

The Eagles’ Performance: A Closer Look

Three Eagles finished in the top 20, led by senior Parker Claxton, who shot a -7 to finish tied for 7th. Morgan Blythe finished tied for 17th with a -3, while senior Ian Glanton used a second-round 68 to finish tied for 19th at -2.

The first round saw some significant contributions from Thomas Horne and Parker Claxton, who shot a 5-under-par 67 and a 68, respectively. Their efforts, along with others, helped the team to a first-round score of 278 (-10). The second round was equally impressive, with the team carding a 276 (-12).

Sunday’s conditions proved to be challenging, yet three Eagles managed to go under par. Edouard Cereto led the pack with a 69, followed by Blythe and Glanton who both posted 70s.

Standout Statistics

Georgia Southern led the field with 63 birdies and tied for the lowest bogeys with just 36. Individually, Claxton played the Par 3s at -2, tied for the fourth-best mark in the field. He also played the Par 4s at -6, tied for the second-best mark for the weekend. Blythe and Carter both played the Par 5s at -7, tied for the second-best total in the field.

Claxton’s performance at the Schenkel Invitational was particularly outstanding. The Claxton native posted four top-10 finishes, tying for seventh as a freshman, sophomore, and senior, and tying for third as a junior.

Looking Ahead

Despite falling just short of the top spot, the Eagles’ performance at the Schenkel Invitational is a testament to their skill and tenacity. As they gear up for forthcoming events, like the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational and the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the team will undoubtedly draw on their experience and learning from this tournament. Their performance has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting season.
