2024 is looking like a promising year for golf. This year, we will see the return of the President’s Cup as well as the Solheim Cup. Both being biennial events, they are typically held every other year. With the unruly nature of Covid-19 effecting golf tournaments, the Solheim Cup will be held back to back years in an attempt to break away from the timeline of the Ryder Cup. We will also see pros returning to compete in other major tournaments, like The Masters, for example.
Here are some of this year’s biggest tournaments for Men & Women’s golf – so you can add them to your calendar!
Men’s Tournaments
The Masters
Since 1934, the Masters Tournament has been one of golf’s most famous events. Some of golf’s greatest moments have come from this tournament. Typically held during the first week of April, the Masters (sometimes referred to as the U.S. Masters outside of North America), is always held at the same location: the historic Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters is an annual event, with the 2023 title currently being held by Jon Rahm, the fourth Masters Champion to come from Spain. The tournament has a number of recognizable traditions. Since the 1949, a green jacket has been awarded to the champion, along with a trophy of course. The green jacket has since become a symbol representing the best golfers in the world.
The 2024 Masters has been scheduled to take place Monday, April 8 through Sunday, April 14 at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia. The Masters is expected to be broadcasted live on ESPN and CBS.
Players Championship
The Players Championship is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Beginning in 1974, it was originally known as the Tournament Players Championship. At one point, this tournament offered the highest purse at $12.5 million in 2019 up to $25 million in 2023. The field usually includes the top 50 players in the world rankings, but, unlike the major championships, it is owned by the PGA Tour and not an official event on other tours. Slowly making his way back into the big leagues, Tiger Woods is projected to play in one tournament a month, with 6 tournaments already noted so far for 2024. The Players Championship is one of the tournaments we could expect to see Woods competing in this year. The 2023 title is currently being held by Scottie Scheffler. The host course of the Players Championship is the renowned TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The tournament has been played at this location since 1982.
The 2024 Players Championship is scheduled to take place March 12-17 at the iconic TPC at Sawgrass. The Players Championship is expected to be broadcasted live on the Golf Channel and NBC.
PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is yet another annual event conducted by the PGA of America. This tournament is one of the four men’s major golf championships. Traditionally held in August, the tournament has since been held in May, the week prior to Memorial Day, since 2019. Winners of this tournament are automatically invited to play in the other three major tournaments: The Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship. Also included is the Players Championship. The PGA Championship has been held at various venues, not calling a singular course it’s home. The 2023 tournament was held at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. The winner of the 2023 tournament was Brooks Koepka, with Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland following closely behind him both tied for second place.
This year’s PGA Championship is being held at the Valhalla Golf Course in Kentucky from May 16–19. The PGA Championship is expected to be broadcasted live on ESPN and CBS.
U.S. Open
The United States Open Championship, known as the U.S. Open, is an annual tournament held in the United States. It is the third of the four men’s major golf championships. It is presented by the United States Golf Association (USGA) typically in mid-June. The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895, on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. The U.S. Open does not have a ‘home course’, with it being held at various courses across the country. The 2023 tournament was held in California at the Los Angeles Country Club. The title went to Wyndham Clark, just beating out past winner, Rory McIlroy.
This year’s tournament has already been getting a lot of buzz due to it being held at one of the most famous courses in the U.S., Pinehurst No.2, from June 13-16. The U.S. Open is expected to be broadcasted live on the USA Network and NBC.
The Open
Not to be confused with the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, which is sometimes referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Beginning in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the tournament rotated between venues, using various golf courses in the United Kingdom. This tournament is another of the elite four men’s tournaments. Since the PGA Championship moved to May in 2019, the Open has become the final major tournament of the year as it takes place typically in mid-July. Like the Masters, the Open also has several major traditions. One tradition being that the winner receives the Claret Jug, a trophy first awarded in 1872. The winner is also named “the Champion Golfer of the Year”, a title that dates to the first Open in 1860. The 2023 reigning champion is American Brian Harman, who won at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England.
The 2024 Open will close out the major 2024 events on July 14-21 at the Royal Troon Golf Club. The Open is expected to be broadcasted live on the USA Network and NBC/Peacock.
Presidents Cup
The Presidents Cup has been a biennial series of men’s golf matches between a team representing the U.S. and an International Team representing the rest of the world (not including Europe). Since 1994 it has been held within even-numbered years, with the Ryder Cup being held in odd numbered years. The Ryder Cup is a similar tournament, but has Team USA competing against Team Europe. The cancellation of the 2001 Ryder Cup due to the September 11 attacks pushed both tournaments back a year, and the Presidents Cup was then held in odd-numbered years. It switched back to even-number years following the postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Team won the 14th Presidents Cup in 2022, defeating the International Team by a 17.5-12.5 margin at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Each year a new course is selected to host the tournament, taking turns between U.S. and International soil.
The 2024 Presidents Cup is set to take place from September 24–29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Presidents Cup should be available to watch on NBC/Peacock.
Women’s Tournaments
U.S. Women’s Open
The U.S. Women’s Open, one of 15 national golf championships conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA). It is the oldest of the LPGA Tour’s five major championships, which also includes the Chevron Championship, Women’s PGA Championship, Women’s Open Championship, and The Evian Championship. First established in 1946, it was operated by the Women’s Professional Golfers Association (WPGA) for the first three years and the LPGA for the next four. It ultimately became a USGA event in 1953. The U.S. Women’s Open is the second major of the LPGA season and has the highest purse in women’s golf. This tournament is held every year at a different venue throughout the US. The 2023 winner was Allisen Corpuz who dominated at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open is scheduled to take place May 30 to June 2 at the Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. The U.S. Women’s Open is expected to be broadcasted live on the USA Network and NBC/Peacock.
AIG Women’s Open
The Women’s Open, which was originally known as the Women’s British Open (and is still widely referred to by that name outside the UK) is a major championship in women’s professional golf. It is recognized by both the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour as a major event. In 2019, it became known as the AIG Women’s British Open. By July of 2020, the sponsorship agreement with AIG was extended through to 2025. As a result of the deal, the championship was rebranded by The R&A to the AIG Women’s Open. The tournament has always been held at various locations throughout the UK. The reigning champion from 2023 is Lilia Vu, who won at Walton Heath Golf Club.
This year’s AIG Women’s Open will take place at arguably the most famous golf course in the world, St Andrews Links in Scotland. It will be held from August 21-25. The AIG Women’s Open should be available to view on NBC/Peacock.
KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
First held in 1955, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is one of five majors on the LPGA Tour. Formerly known as the LPGA Championship, the LPGA announced in 2014 that the PGA of America would become a partner of the event, and that it would be renamed the Women’s PGA Championship beginning in 2015. The partnership with KPMG caused the addition to the tournament name. Prior to the partnership with the PGA, the tournament had been typically held at a consistent location each year. However, it has now allowed for the event to be held at various locations throughout the U.S. The 2023 reigning champion is Yin Ruoning, representing China. That tournament was held at the Baltusrol Golf Club located in New Jersey.
In 2024, we will see a change of venue to the Sahalee Country Club in Washington state. The event is scheduled to take place from June 20-23. The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship should be available to view on NBC/Peacock.
The Chevron Championship
Another event on the LPGA Tour, the Chevron Championship is one of the tour’s five major championships, and has traditionally been the first of the season since its elevation to major status in 1983. Since its inception, it had been held annually at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. However, in 2021 after agreeing to a sponsorship with the Chevron Corporation, the tournament was moved to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in the Greater Houston area starting in 2023. Along with the change in venue came a change in dates as well. The 2023 title is being held by Lilia Vu of the U.S.
The Chevron Championship will take place from April 17-21, 2024. The Chevron Championship is expected to be broadcasted live on the Golf Channel and NBC/Peacock.
U.S. Solheim Cup
The Solheim Cup is another biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers which is played in teams showcasing Team U.S. and Team Europe battling for the trophy. The inaugural Cup was held in 1990, and since has been played in even numbered years until 2002. They intended to compete in alternating years with the Ryder Cup. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ryder Cup and the Solheim Cup have shuffled their dates a few times. Currently taking the odd number years, the Solheim Cup will be played back to back years in order to switch back to the even number years. The 2023 tournament ended in a tie at 14-14. Due to the tied score, Team Europe retained the trophy as they were named the winners in both 2019 and 2021 tournaments.
The Solheim Cup will be played again this year; this time being held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. This course has previously hosted four Presidents Cup matches. Look out for the event scheduled to be held from September 10-15. The U.S. Solheim Cup should be available to view on NBC/Peacock.
BONUS! Golf at the 2024 Summer Olympics
This year we will see yet another Summer Olympics! Golf was played at the 1900 Games in Paris with Margaret Ives Abbott winning the women’s event, and fellow American, Charles Edward Sands winning the men’s. Four years later, the women’s event was replaced by a team event, but golf was dropped right after. In October 2009, members voted in favor of reinstituting golf to the Olympic roster for Rio 2016. Great Britain’s Justin Rose won the men’s title and Korea’s Inbee Park claimed women’s gold. This year at Paris, the event will be staged at the Le Golf National in Guyancourt which hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup. A maximum of four players per nation can take part in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments. There are 60 participants in each, based on the respective official rankings lists in June 2024, and they will all play four rounds with no halfway cut.
The golf tournaments at the 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to run from August 1-10. Although an official roster has not been released, we can expect the world’s best golfers to be back at Paris 2024, fighting for the gold medal once again.
