Nick Dunlap Comes Close to College Golf’s First 592 min read

Just inches away from achieving an impressive score of 59, Nick Dunlap would have been the first golfer to shoot a “perfect game” in a college competition.

So far this year has been quite exciting for Dunlap as he qualified for the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club in June, won the U.S. Amateur in August, and played for the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team at St. Andrews in September. However, this past week Dunlap came extremely close to achieving a unique honor, which has spectators turning their heads in awe of the talent this young man has shown.

In the morning round Dunlap was playing with his Crimson Tide team, he shot a three-under 69. In the afternoon, he was back out for Round 2, where he quickly gained traction. Within 17 holes he had made an eagle and 10 birdies to get to 12 under for the round. A birdie on the 18th hole would secure college golf’s first sub-60 score. It looked promising for Dunlap when he hit his approach on the home hole to eight feet. With a near miss, Dunlap still became the 18th player in college golf history to record a 60. The last player to do so was Columbia’s Nathan Han in October of last year.

With this impressive showing, Dunlap broke a slew of school records. He broke Alabama’s 18-hole scoring mark (61) set by Bobby Wyatt at the 2014 SEC Championship at Sea Island G.C.. He also became the first Crimson Tide golfer to finish at 10 or more strokes under par. And his 36-hole 15-under score on the day, in relation to par, also is an all-time best at Alabama.

Nick Dunlap’s performances as of late have been headed in an upward slope. We can now expect stellar gameplay from him in future competitions, and are eager to watch this young talent grow.
