One of the fall’s most selective boys’ invitationals won’t be played. Here’s what it means for the 72 juniors who earned a spot, and for anyone building a fall schedule.
If your fall calendar hinges on one big start, this week is a reminder that tournament schedules are written in pencil. The AJGA has cancelled the 2026 PING Invitational due to weather, so one of the most selective boys’ fields of the fall won’t play a single round at Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
The event was set for Oct. 9-12 as a 54-hole stroke-play invitational for a 72-player boys field, per the AJGA’s tournament page. Getting in was the hard part. Under the AJGA’s 2026 entry criteria, invitations went to the top 65 boys, 2027 graduates and younger, in the Rolex AJGA Rankings as of Aug. 18. Seminole Legacy was set up at 7,350 yards, par 72.
As of Friday, the AJGA’s notice says only that the event was cancelled due to weather. It has not posted a makeup date or further detail. Its national office is closed Monday, Oct. 12, and reopens Tuesday, so families with questions should expect replies then.
This was set to be the PING Invitational’s first year in Tallahassee. According to the AJGA’s tournament history, the event began in 2006 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., and stayed there through 2022 before moving to The Pfau Course at Indiana University in 2023 and The Saticoy Club in California for 2024 and 2025. Jordan Spieth is its only two-time boys champion. Preston Hage won last year by nine shots, in a week that included a second-round 62. Weather has hit this event before: in 2014, the final round was cancelled and play was cut to 36 holes.
The Hub’s view, and this is our opinion: the invitation is the achievement. Earning one of 65 ranking-based spots took a full summer of results, and that body of work is still there on Monday whether or not the weekend happened. A cancelled event doesn’t erase a season. It just means one fewer chance to add to it.
If you were in the field, keep an eye on your email and the AJGA Player Center for word on the $295 entry fee and any next steps; the AJGA hasn’t said yet how it will handle either. The event also carried Performance Based Entry status, including full exemption for a top-15 finish, so it’s worth asking the AJGA how the cancellation affects your planning for next season. For everyone else, it’s a good moment to look at your own fall plan and make sure no single event is carrying your whole season.
