Ava Chen, an 11-year-old golf prodigy from Bay Ridge, is set to compete on a national stage. Specifically, the prestigious Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship will be held at Augusta National this weekend. Her journey began in her backyard and has since become a remarkable story of dedication.
Foundations of a Young Champion
Chen’s interest in the sport was first sparked during the pandemic. She watched her father practice his golf stroke in their family backyard. Today, her commitment has significantly reduced her father’s own playing time. Daily practice sessions and weekend tournaments have kept her family very busy.
Valuable training was found at the City Parks Foundation’s Junior Golf Center. This facility is located adjacent to the Dyker Beach Golf Course. Free instruction and equipment are provided to residents between the ages of six and 17. Access to such outdoor facilities is considered rare and valuable for New York City players.
The Academic and Athletic Balance
Academic responsibilities are balanced with golf commitments at Poly Prep Country Day School. Late nights are often required to maintain this challenging but rewarding routine. However, Chen remains undeterred in her pursuit of excellence. She believes she can excel in both fields through persistent effort.
The City Parks program was originally launched in 1999 using modified baseball fields. A permanent Junior Golf Center was finally opened in 2008 to meet growing demand. The program is now highly sought after and utilizes a lottery system for admission. Once enrolled, students attend weekly lessons grouped by their age and ability.
The Road to Augusta and Beyond
Open practice sessions are attended by Chen on a daily basis. Director Jonathan Gamberg attributes her national ranking to this relentless work ethic. If she wins, she will be the third New Yorker to achieve this feat. Consequently, the landscape of youth golf in the city has been transformed by the program.
The social element remains Chen’s favorite aspect of the game. Playing with friends and meeting fellow golfers in Augusta are major highlights for her. She plans to remain relaxed during the intense national competition. Ultimately, the entire experience is viewed as an opportunity to have fun.
