In the world of youth sports, the name Mario Vilardi is fast becoming synonymous with golfing excellence. A ten-year-old fourth-grader at Fishkill Plains Elementary School, Vilardi has recently showcased his extraordinary talent at the Augusta National Junior Golf event, earning him significant recognition and setting him on a promising path towards a future PGA career.
Rising Star at Augusta National
The Drive, Put and Chip competition at Augusta National is a lead-in event to the Masters. It features 80 exceptional young golfers from across the United States, among whom Vilardi was the only boy from New York state selected to compete. Despite the high stakes and intense pressure synonymous with such a prestigious event, Vilardi demonstrated his mettle with a commendable second-place finish in the boys 10-11 division, falling just one stroke short of the first-place winner.
“I don’t think about what I have to do,” Vilardi said when asked about his ability to stay composed under high-pressure moments. “I just do whatever I can.” His mother, Louisa Vilardi, echoed his sentiment, noting how her son seemed unfazed by the bustling atmosphere.
A Community Champion Inspiring Peers
Back at Fishkill Plains Elementary School, Vilardi’s classmates watched his stunning performance on live television, and the positive response was overwhelming. Amelia Kelly, a fellow fourth-grader, commented on his ability to manage stress and perform under pressure, describing it as ‘very inspiring.’
Amy Fazio, the school principal, hopes that Vilardi’s breakthrough will motivate his classmates and impart the importance of discipline, hard work, and passion. “If you find something that you’re passionate about,” Fazio told the class, “we’ve got your back too.”
Training for a PGA Career
Beyond his recent success, Vilardi, who has been playing golf consistently for five years, is already looking towards the future. When asked about his plans to play college-level golf, his response was as measured as his golf swings. “It depends on where I go from now on,” he said, indicating a pragmatic approach beyond his years.
Much of Vilardi’s training has been conducted on a golf simulator at his home, under the guidance of his father. Despite his young age, the Hudson Valley native already boasts the ability to drive a golf ball 225 yards.
